(Photo Veronique Czechorowski) The Polonia Business Journal sought out our own version of the Tatry mountains here in the United States. We found it in Dover, Vermont. While not quite Zakopane, Mount Snow has developed into a very nice resort town with a bit of a Polish flavor.
Of course, a skier cannot ski without the proper equipment. After searching vainly for a pair of ski pants under $160 for a member of our group, we stopped in to see if Veronique's Ski-Sports Shop could solve our problem. Luckily, we ran into owner Veronique Czechorowski. Able to speak Polish and French, Pani / Madamosielle Czechorowski has owned her popular shop for over 20 years. It was a nice surprise. In addition to the ski pants at a far better price, we learned that we could rent skis for far less than we would on the mountain. Our entire group rented boots, poles and Rossingol shaped skis. In addition to snowboards and skis, customers can buy jackets, hats, sunglasses and a variety of other items including unique buckles. A visitor from Florida could conceivably rent his entire outfit and ski equipment in one stop.
A day of skiing can build up one's appetite. What better place than the Chopin Restaurant located in the Matterhorn Inn. A traditional sit down Vermont style bistro, the eatery features American style cuisine, Black Angus and Tuna Steaks, Pork Tenderloin, Trout Polonaise, as well as Polish cuisine, kielbasa, pierogi, stuffed cabbage. Held the first Saturday of each month, the Chopin's Polish buffets are quite popular with visitors and locals alike. Their tomato bisque with blue cheese soup won "Best of Show" in Vermont Life's "Wine & Harvest Festival."
Tired after a full day of skiing and full belly of the Chopin's award winning cuisine, look no further to spend the night at the Matterhorn Inn. Joseph and Wanda Kruszewski took over ownership of the Matterhorn Inn in 2004. Along with their son Andrew, the former Connecticut residents fell in love with the mountains of Vermont.
Of course, the winter is not the only time to enjoy the Mount Snow region. What Pole doesn't enjoy cool summer evenings, hiking, fishing, mushroom picking, lakes, snowy winter months, breathtaking autumn views, and crisp fresh mountain air.
Veronique's Ski Shop is located on Route 100 North in West Dover.
Chopin's Restaurant and the Matterhorn Inn are located at 248 Route 100 North, West Dover.
